Repurposed Stories: Upcycled wood and details for the loft at Sparrow Creek Ranch

Sometimes God sends a helper like Charlie Vagabond Hayes.

Every little piece of wood being “crazy angles, nothing plumb or flush it’s been a challenge with every pice of wood being it’s own specific length, width, and depth!!!” It takes a lot longer per job but I reckon they cam out pretty nice, hey?”

Everyone who comes to SCR instantly knows it’s a labor of love. There is nothing done the fast way here! Working with repurposed materials and doing it all ourselves, primarily, means a slow pace but one that makes incredible one-of-a-kind additions to The Barn at Sparrow Creek Ranch. Couples and their families who value hard work, family business, and doing things with intention are drawn to SCR from across the country for their wedding days. But, sometimes we start to do many things at once and God sends us a helper. There have been many helpers through SCR’s 10 years and we love sharing those stories. An Alabama preacher man had blessed SCR just to name one we’ll need to tell stories about later!

Most recently God sent Charlie. The van life called to this wild at heart vagabond who has a heart for things we hold dear ourselves at SCR. He came to K&K Motors where Kevin, the barn builder-dad-owner-janitor works, looking for some parts for his van. Finding out he was good with tools and utilizing repurposed materials Kevin brought him out to SCR and Charlie’s eyes went wide. It didn’t take long for Charlie to get right into the thick of our building projects to join the attention to detail and slow pace of repurposing old into new. We’re so thankful he did! Charlie is helping with a few amazing projects we’ve got planned at SCR and we cna’t wait to show you more.

Window Frames for the top loft were the first project Charlie took on at SCR. Every little piece of wood being “crazy angles, nothing plumb or flush it’s been a challenge with every piece of wood being its own specific length, width, and depth!!!” It takes a lot longer per job but I reckon they came out pretty nice, hey?”

No one is going to see these frames.

They are on the outside of the loft looking out over the sides of the Barn. But, that doens’t mean we didn’t want to use repurposed materials to stay true to SCR and what we are about. We care deeply about the integrity of SCR and repurposing as many old pieces of materials as we can to be as sustainable as we can.

Why do you like working on Sparrow Creek Ranch North Texas Wedding Venue Charlie? "

Everything is upcycled materials, my work area is a wonderful patio over looking the forrest with plenty of sunshine to warm the chilly mornings, I have a plethera of projects to challenge me and keep my interest, and busy... Frames for the outside windows, drywall the closet and bathroom, frame a hobbit doorway that doesn't really go anywhere lol, finish the loft floor planks and white wash them all, squaring up warped boards to use which has been quite a fun challenge!

There isn’t an inch at SCR that wasn’t created with dedication, hard work, and creativity. We think it’s the most unique wedding venue in Texas and we love sharing it with couples from across the country. We hope to see you soon, come for a tour and see it for yourself!
